Kathmandu, Ashwin 9. Prime Minister Balendra Shah has stated that climate justice should not remain merely a phrase confined to United Nations documents. Addressing the 81st session of the UN General Assembly on Friday morning, Prime Minister Shah clarified that for Nepal, climate-induced catastrophes represent not only humanitarian crises but also a "development emergency."
During his address, he emphasized that nations with high carbon emissions must shoulder greater responsibility, asserting that climate justice must actively support victims rather than remaining a mere rhetorical flourish in UN documents. He also made it clear that Nepal advocates for all parties to fulfill their respective obligations regarding the impacts of climate change. Stressing that climate-induced disasters should not be turned into a subject of geopolitical dispute, Prime Minister Shah reiterated Nepal's unwavering commitment to climate justice.
